AIRWAY CLEARANCE UNIT

AIRWAY CLEARANCE UNIT

Keeping your airways clear of secretions is an essential part of helping people with lung disease live full, healthy and active lifestyles. Increased mucus production and secretion retention can lead to shortness of breath, chronic cough and frequent respiratory infections.

The Airway Clearance Unit of the Pulmonary Wellness & Rehabilitation Center was created by experts with over 20 years of experience in chest physical therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation who provide comprehensive, individualized secretion clearance programs.

Patients can usually be seen within 24 hours and same-day appointments are often possible.

The Unit's programs include but are not limited to the following treatments:

Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) Training

Positive Expiratory Pressure is a therapeutic technique that pushes air into the lungs in order to help you to loosen and clear secretions. This specialized training consists of a one-to-one, 90-minute treatment session with a chest specialist who will train you using the most advanced treatment protocols and the appropriate PEP device (Acapella Valve, Lung Flute or Flutter). During your session, deep breathing coordinated with therapeutic exercise are emphasized in order to enhance the effects of the device. Patients are taught how to properly care for their device and are provided with written instructions to reinforce the effectiveness of their treatment.

Postural Drainage and Chest Physical Therapy

This specialized treatment consists of a one-to-one, 60-minute session with a chest therapist individualized to meet your specific respiratory needs. In addition to traditional cupping, ribcage mobility and deep breathing techniques, patients will be educated in proper positioning, cough, huffing, and diaphragmatic breathing. Patients will also be provided with a home exercise program.

Patient Education

At Pulmonary Wellness, our experience has taught us that the most successful patients are those that have a good understanding of their disease as well as the most effective techniques for management.

Follow-Up

Following the treatment session, patients will have ongoing access to the therapist by phone or email in order to answer any questions or to help troubleshoot any problems that may arise.
